1. Spurious thrombocytopenia (falsely low platelet count) was considered in a healthy 21 year old male whole blood donor without any obvious signs of petechiae or echymoses.

2. When his EDTA blood sample was drawn and analyzed by automated cell counter (Sysmex K21, Japan), following parameters were obtained:

Hemoglobin = 16.8 g/dL; Hematocrit = 51.3%; Platelet Count = 47 x 103/µL; All red cell indices were within normal limits.

3. However, repeat citrated sample showed normal platelet count, and peripheral smear revealed aggregates of giant sized platelets.
